Truck toll device for Europe
A truck crossing Europe can carry a single box to pay tolls in almost every country. Here is how it works and how to get one.
A truck toll device is an on-board unit fixed to the windscreen that automatically pays motorway tolls and distance-based tolls. Interoperable devices under the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) work in several countries with one contract and one invoice showing each country’s VAT.
- No stops at toll booths.
- One invoice per country and per plate.
- Foreign toll VAT documented for refund.
- No fines in countries with mandatory distance tolls.
Motorway tolls and distance tolls
Spain, Portugal, France and Italy mainly charge on concession motorways, at booths or by electronic toll. Germany, Belgium, Austria, Poland and, since July 2026, the Netherlands charge trucks over 3.5 t per kilometre and require an on-board unit or prior registration.

Do vans need a toll device?
Distance tolls in Germany, Belgium, Austria, Poland and the Netherlands apply to vehicles over 3.5 t. Vans up to 3.5 t do not pay them, although some countries require a vignette.
